Gold(III) fluoride, also known by its chemical formula AuF3, is an inorganic compound consisting of gold and fluorine. This compound is notable for its oxidation state of gold, which is +3, and its role in various chemical reactions and applications, particularly in the field of chemistry and material science.

Properties[edit | edit source]

Gold(III) fluoride is a red or brown solid that is highly reactive and powerful as a fluorinating agent. It has a melting point of 450 °C, at which it decomposes. This compound is soluble in water, where it hydrolyzes to form hydrofluoric acid and gold compounds. Due to its strong oxidizing properties, AuF3 must be handled with care, as it can react violently with organic materials and is corrosive to the skin.

Synthesis[edit | edit source]

The synthesis of gold(III) fluoride involves the direct reaction of gold with fluorine gas. This process requires careful control of conditions to prevent the formation of lower oxidation state gold fluorides or the decomposition of the product.

Applications[edit | edit source]

Gold(III) fluoride is used primarily in the chemical industry as a catalyst for certain reactions. Its ability to act as a strong fluorinating agent makes it valuable in the synthesis of fluorinated organic compounds. Additionally, its properties are exploited in the field of material science for the preparation of gold-containing materials with unique electronic and optical properties.

Safety[edit | edit source]

Handling of gold(III) fluoride requires strict safety precautions due to its corrosive nature and the potential release of toxic fluorine gas upon decomposition. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ventilation are essential when working with this compound.
