Gorton's

Gorton's of Gloucester is a subsidiary of the Japanese seafood conglomerate Nippon Suisan Kaisha. It is one of the oldest continuously operating companies in the United States, and its primary products are frozen seafood, including fish sticks.

Gorton's was founded in 1849 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, by Slade Gorton as a small family firm. The company initially specialized in salt codfish, but later expanded its product line to include fresh fish and then frozen seafood products.

In 1906, Gorton's merged with two other Gloucester fish companies to form Gorton-Pew Fisheries Company. The company was a pioneer in the quick freezing of fish and developed the first frozen fish sticks in the 1950s.

In 1968, Gorton's was acquired by General Mills, and in 1995, it was sold to Unilever. In 2001, Unilever sold Gorton's to Nippon Suisan Kaisha.

Gorton's product line includes a variety of frozen seafood items, such as fish sticks, breaded and battered fish fillets, and shrimp. The company also produces value-added seafood meals and appetizers.

Marketing[edit | edit source]

Gorton's is known for its advertising slogan, "Trust the Gorton's Fisherman," which was introduced in the 1970s. The company's mascot is a fisherman, who appears on the product packaging and in advertising campaigns.
