William Sealy Gosset (June 13, 1876 – October 16, 1937) was a British statistician and brewer, best known for his work on statistical analysis and the development of the Student's t-distribution. He published under the pseudonym Student to protect his identity while working for the Guinness Brewery.

Gosset was born on June 13, 1876, in Canterbury, England. He attended Winchester College before studying mathematics and chemistry at New College, Oxford. After completing his studies, Gosset joined the Guinness Brewery in Dublin, Ireland, where he worked as a chemist.

At the Guinness Brewery, Gosset was tasked with improving the quality of Guinness beer. He applied statistical methods to analyze the brewing process and make improvements. However, due to the company's strict secrecy policies, Gosset was not allowed to publish his findings under his own name.
