Government Erode Medical College
Government Erode Medical College (formerly IRT Perundurai Medical College) is a government medical institution located in Erode, Tamil Nadu, India. It was established in 1992 and is affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R Medical University, Chennai. The college is situated near Perundurai, off the Salem-Kochi National Highway 544. It includes a hospital and is recognized by the Medical Council of India.
The history of the college dates back to 1930 when a district committee was formed to combat tuberculosis in Coimbatore. The decision was made to establish a tuberculosis sanatorium in Perundurai, which was later renamed Ramalingam Tuberculosis Sanatorium in 1952. In 1986, the government of Tamil Nadu attached a medical college to the sanatorium under the Institute of Road Transport. The college started functioning in 1992 with 60 student intake, which was later increased to 100 in 2017.
In 2019, the Government of Tamil Nadu took over the college and renamed it as Government IRT Perundurai Medical College. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the college was designated as a facility for treating COVID-19 cases in Erode district.
The college plays a crucial role in providing medical education and healthcare services to the people of Erode and surrounding areas. It continues to contribute to the field of medicine and produce skilled healthcare professionals.
