Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine, Chennai
The Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine, also known as the Tambaram TB Sanatorium, is a prominent state-owned hospital located in Chennai, India. It is funded and managed by the government of Tamil Nadu. The hospital was established in 1928 by Dr. David Jacob Aaron Chowry-Muthu, a tuberculosis specialist. Initially, it had 12 beds and was situated on the mountainside of Pachamalai in Tambaram. Dr. Chowry-Muthu aimed to develop the hospital similar to the Mendip Hills Sanatorium in the United Kingdom. The hospital was later taken over by the government in 1937 and converted into a sanatorium. Today, it is a full-service medical center with 776 beds for the sanatorium and 120 beds for the rehabilitation center. The hospital is affiliated with Stanley Medical College.
