Government Medical College, Udhampur was established in response to the growing need for medical professionals in the region. The foundation stone of the college was laid by the then Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Shri Mehbooba Mufti, in 2017. The college started its academic activities in 2019 with an initial intake of 100 students.

Government Medical College, Udhampur offers undergraduate medical education leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The duration of the MBBS course is five and a half years, including a one-year compulsory internship. The college follows the curriculum prescribed by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the University of Jammu.
