Gramma
Gramma is a genus of ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Grammatidae. These fishes are commonly found in the Atlantic Ocean, particularly in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. They are known for their vibrant colors and are popular in the aquarium trade.
Description[edit | edit source]
Members of the genus Gramma are small, colorful fishes that typically inhabit coral reefs. They have elongated bodies and are known for their striking coloration, which can include shades of purple, yellow, and blue. The most well-known species is the Royal gramma (Gramma loreto), which is characterized by its bright purple front half and yellow back half.
Habitat[edit | edit source]
Gramma species are typically found in shallow waters, often at depths ranging from 1 to 60 meters. They prefer environments with plenty of hiding spots, such as coral reefs, rocky outcrops, and crevices. These fishes are often seen swimming upside down under ledges and overhangs.
Behavior[edit | edit source]
Gramma species are generally peaceful and can be kept in reef aquariums with other non-aggressive species. They are known to be territorial, especially males during the breeding season. Their diet mainly consists of plankton, small crustaceans, and other tiny marine organisms.
Species[edit | edit source]
The genus Gramma includes the following species:
- Gramma brasiliensis - Brazilian gramma
- Gramma dejongi - Dejong's gramma
- Gramma linki - Yellowlined gramma
- Gramma loreto - Royal gramma
- Gramma melacara - Blackcap gramma
Aquarium Care[edit | edit source]
Gramma species are popular in the aquarium trade due to their vibrant colors and relatively easy care requirements. They require a tank with plenty of hiding places and stable water conditions. It is important to maintain good water quality and provide a diet that includes a variety of foods to ensure their health and coloration.
