Grand Junction

Grand Junction is a city located in the western part of the U.S. state of Colorado. It is the most populous municipality in Mesa County, and serves as a major commercial and transportation hub within the large area between the Green River and the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. The city is situated along the Colorado River, where it receives the Gunnison River from the south, hence the name "Grand Junction".

The area around Grand Junction was first settled by the Ute Tribe of Native Americans. The city was established in 1882 by a group of settlers who found the area to be ideal for agriculture due to the confluence of the Colorado and Gunnison rivers. The city quickly grew with the arrival of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in 1887.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Grand Junction is located in the high desert country of Western Colorado. The city is surrounded by vast areas of public lands, including the Colorado National Monument, McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area, and the Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness. The city's unique location at the junction of two rivers provides a variety of recreational opportunities, including fishing, rafting, and hiking.

The economy of Grand Junction is diverse and includes sectors such as healthcare, education, retail, and tourism. The city is home to St. Mary's Hospital, the largest healthcare facility between Denver and Salt Lake City. Grand Junction also hosts the main campus of Colorado Mesa University, which contributes significantly to the local economy.

Grand Junction is known for its vibrant arts scene and hosts several annual events, including the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra, the Grand Junction Film Festival, and the Colorado Mountain Winefest. The city is also home to the Museum of Western Colorado, which features exhibits on the region's history and culture.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Grand Junction is served by the Grand Junction Regional Airport, which provides commercial flights to several major U.S. cities. The city is also a hub for road transportation, with two major highways, Interstate 70 and U.S. Route 50, passing through the city.
