Grand Strand

The Grand Strand is a large stretch of beaches extending from Little River, South Carolina to Georgetown, South Carolina on the East Coast of the United States. It is a major tourist destination along the Atlantic Ocean in the southeastern United States, known for its wide sandy beaches, golf courses, and entertainment options.

The Grand Strand spans approximately 60 miles (97 km) along the coast of South Carolina. It includes several towns and cities, with Myrtle Beach being the most prominent. Other notable areas within the Grand Strand include North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Garden City, and Pawleys Island.

The area now known as the Grand Strand was originally inhabited by the Waccamaw and Winyah tribes. European settlers arrived in the late 17th century, and the region developed slowly until the 20th century. The construction of the Intracoastal Waterway and the establishment of Myrtle Beach State Park in the 1930s helped to spur tourism and development.

Tourism is the primary industry in the Grand Strand. The area attracts millions of visitors each year, drawn by its beaches, amusement parks, shopping centers, and nightlife. Popular attractions include the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, Broadway at the Beach, and the SkyWheel.

The Grand Strand is also known as a premier golf destination, with over 100 golf courses designed by renowned architects such as Robert Trent Jones, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus. The region hosts several golf tournaments and events throughout the year.

In addition to tourism, the Grand Strand has a diverse economy that includes retail, healthcare, and education. The area is home to Coastal Carolina University and Horry-Georgetown Technical College, which contribute to the local economy and workforce development.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

The Grand Strand is accessible via several major highways, including U.S. Route 17, U.S. Route 501, and South Carolina Highway 31. The region is also served by the Myrtle Beach International Airport, which offers flights to and from various destinations across the United States.
