Green Memorial Hospital

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Green Memorial Hospital is a non-profit hospital located in Manipay, Sri Lanka. The hospital was established in 1848 by Dr Samuel Fisk Green, an American missionary and physician. The hospital is currently managed by the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India (JDCSI), a Protestant church organization.

History[edit | edit source]

The Green Memorial Hospital was founded by Dr. Samuel Fisk Green, who was part of the American Ceylon Mission. The hospital was established with the aim of providing medical care to the local population and also to serve as a training institution for local medical practitioners.

Education[edit | edit source]

Green Memorial Hospital holds the distinction of being the first medical school in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). During his 30-year tenure in Ceylon, Dr. Green used the hospital to train more than 60 locals as doctors. This makes Green Memorial Hospital the second oldest teaching hospital in South Asia.

Patient Care[edit | edit source]

In the mid-20th century, Green Memorial Hospital was considered a state-of-the-art medical institution. It provided medical services to both the rich and the poor. However, due to the civil war that ravaged the country, the hospital was in a state of disrepair by 2004. It is no longer considered a premier medical institution in the Jaffna Peninsula in Sri Lanka.

Current Status[edit | edit source]

Despite the challenges, the hospital continues to provide medical services to the local population. Efforts are being made to restore the hospital to its former glory and continue its legacy of providing quality medical education and patient care.
