Gretchen Whitmer (born August 23, 1971) is an American politician and lawyer serving as the 49th Governor of Michigan, a position she has held since January 1, 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, Whitmer was a Michigan State Senator from 2006 to 2015 and the Senate Democratic Leader from 2011 to 2015. She also served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2001 to 2006.

Gretchen Esther Whitmer was born in Lansing, Michigan, to parents Richard and Sherry Whitmer. She grew up in East Lansing, Michigan, and graduated from Forest Hills Central High School in Grand Rapids. Whitmer went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in communications from Michigan State University and a Juris Doctor from the Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University.
