Grolsch Brewery
Grolsch Brewery is a Dutch brewery founded in 1615 by Willem Neerfeldt in Groenlo, Netherlands. The brewery is known for its distinctive swingtop bottle and its premium lager beer. Grolsch Brewery is one of the oldest operating breweries in the world and has a rich history of brewing excellence.
History[edit | edit source]
Grolsch Brewery was established in 1615 in the town of Groenlo, which was then known as Grolle. The brewery was founded by Willem Neerfeldt, and it quickly gained a reputation for producing high-quality beer. In 1676, the brewery was taken over by Peter Cuyper, who introduced the iconic swingtop bottle, which remains a symbol of the brand to this day.
In the 19th century, Grolsch Brewery expanded its operations and began exporting its beer to other countries. The brewery continued to grow throughout the 20th century, and in 1995, it opened a new state-of-the-art brewing facility in Enschede, Netherlands.
Products[edit | edit source]
Grolsch Brewery is best known for its premium lager, Grolsch Premium Pilsner, which is brewed using a unique combination of two types of hops and a special strain of yeast. The brewery also produces a variety of other beers, including:
- Grolsch Weizen
- Grolsch Radler
- Grolsch Blonde Lager
- Grolsch 0.0% (non-alcoholic beer)
Swingtop Bottle[edit | edit source]
One of the most distinctive features of Grolsch beer is its swingtop bottle, also known as the "flip-top" or "swing-top" bottle. This type of bottle has a ceramic stopper with a rubber gasket that is held in place by a wire bail. The swingtop bottle was introduced by Peter Cuyper in 1897 and has become an iconic symbol of the Grolsch brand.
Ownership[edit | edit source]
In 2008, Grolsch Brewery was acquired by SABMiller, one of the largest brewing companies in the world. In 2016, SABMiller was acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev, and Grolsch Brewery became part of the Asahi Group Holdings, a Japanese beverage company.
Sustainability[edit | edit source]
Grolsch Brewery is committed to sustainability and has implemented various initiatives to reduce its environmental impact. The brewery uses renewable energy sources, recycles waste materials, and has implemented water-saving measures in its brewing process.
