Guinea Pigs (Cavia porcellus), also known as cavies, are small rodents native to the Andean region of South America. They have been domesticated for thousands of years, initially by the indigenous peoples of the region for food, and later became popular as pets in Western societies. Guinea pigs play a significant role in the cultural traditions of South American societies and have also been utilized in scientific research.

The domestication of guinea pigs began around 5000 BC in the Andean region, where they were kept by various indigenous cultures for their meat. The animals were integral to the social and cultural fabric of these societies, often featuring in religious ceremonies and rituals. The European introduction to guinea pigs occurred in the 16th century when traders brought them back from their South American voyages. They quickly became popular as exotic pets among the upper classes and royalty.

Guinea pigs are social animals, preferring to live in groups. They communicate through a variety of sounds, including wheeking, purring, and rumbling. Physically, they are stout-bodied with short limbs, and their fur can vary in color and length depending on the breed. Unlike many rodents, guinea pigs are unable to produce vitamin C and must obtain it from their diet, which primarily consists of hay, fresh vegetables, and pellets.

There are several breeds of guinea pigs, each with unique characteristics. These include the American (or English) guinea pig, which has short, smooth fur; the Abyssinian, known for its rosettes of fur; and the Peruvian, which has long, flowing hair. Other notable breeds include the Silkie, Teddy, and Rex, each with distinct fur textures and patterns.

Guinea pigs have become popular pets due to their docile nature, ease of care, and the strong bonds they can form with their owners. They require a spacious cage, a diet rich in vitamin C, and regular grooming, especially for long-haired breeds. Historically, guinea pigs have been used extensively in medical and scientific research, serving as models for studies in genetics, immunology, and infectious diseases. In South America, guinea pigs continue to hold cultural significance, particularly in countries like Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. They are featured in traditional dishes, festivals, and ceremonies. The animal's role in traditional medicine and as a source of food underscores its importance in Andean culture.

While domestic guinea pigs are abundant, their wild counterparts face threats from habitat loss and degradation. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting the natural habitats of wild species related to the domestic guinea pig, such as the montane guinea pig (Cavia tschudii).
