Hungarian white grape variety

Hárslevelű is a white grape variety from Hungary, known for its distinctive aromatic profile and its role in the production of Tokaji wines. The name "Hárslevelű" translates to "linden leaf" in Hungarian, a reference to the shape of the grape's leaves.

History[edit | edit source]

Hárslevelű has a long history in the wine regions of Hungary, particularly in the Tokaj-Hegyalja region. It is believed to have been cultivated in Hungary since the 18th century. The grape is often blended with Furmint, another key variety in Tokaji wines, to add aromatic complexity and richness.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Hárslevelű is a late-ripening variety, which requires a long growing season to reach full maturity. It thrives in the volcanic soils of the Tokaj region, where the climate is conducive to the development of botrytis cinerea, or "noble rot," which is essential for the production of Tokaji Aszú. The grape is known for its large, loose clusters and its susceptibility to botrytis, which concentrates the sugars and flavors in the grapes.

Wine Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Wines made from Hárslevelű are noted for their floral and honeyed aromas, often with hints of linden blossom, which is reflected in the grape's name. The wines can range from dry to sweet, with the sweet versions often being part of the famous Tokaji Aszú blends. Hárslevelű contributes to the wine's aromatic profile, adding notes of spice and richness to the palate.

Regions[edit | edit source]

While Hárslevelű is most closely associated with the Tokaj region, it is also grown in other parts of Hungary, such as Eger and Somló. Outside of Hungary, it is found in small quantities in Slovakia, where it is used in the production of Tokaj wines under the name "Lipovina."
