HAZMAT Class 2 Gases

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

HAZMAT Class 2 Gases refers to the second category of hazardous materials, as classified by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT). This class includes all gases that are deemed hazardous due to their flammability, toxicity, or potential to cause harm through pressure or temperature changes.

Classification[edit | edit source]

HAZMAT Class 2 Gases are further divided into three divisions:

  • 2.1: Flammable Gases: These are gases that, at ambient temperature and pressure, are ignitable when in a mixture of 13% or less by volume with air, or have a flammable range with air of at least 12%. Examples include propane, butane, and hydrogen.
  • 2.2: Non-Flammable, Non-Toxic Gases: These are gases that are neither flammable nor toxic, but may cause harm due to their pressure or temperature changes. Examples include nitrogen, helium, and carbon dioxide.
  • 2.3: Toxic Gases: These are gases that are liable to cause death or serious injury to human health if inhaled. Examples include chlorine, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

The transportation of HAZMAT Class 2 Gases is regulated by the DOT. The Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) stipulate the packaging, handling, and transportation requirements for these gases. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), a branch of the DOT, is responsible for enforcing these regulations.

Safety Measures[edit | edit source]

Safety measures for handling and transporting HAZMAT Class 2 Gases include the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), proper ventilation, and adherence to handling and storage guidelines. In case of a spill or leak, emergency response procedures as outlined in the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) should be followed.
