HIST1H4I
HIST1H4I
HIST1H4I is a gene that encodes a member of the histone H4 family. Histones are proteins that play a crucial role in packaging DNA into structural units called nucleosomes. The HIST1H4I gene is located on chromosome 6 in humans.
Structure[edit | edit source]
The HIST1H4I gene consists of a coding region that produces the histone H4 protein. This protein is composed of a structured core region and flexible tail regions. The core region is involved in forming the nucleosome structure, while the tail regions undergo various post-translational modifications that regulate gene expression.
Function[edit | edit source]
Histone H4 proteins, including the product of the HIST1H4I gene, are essential components of chromatin, the complex of DNA and proteins in the cell nucleus. These proteins help compact and organize DNA, thereby regulating access to genetic information. Histone modifications, such as acetylation and methylation, can influence gene expression by altering chromatin structure.
Role in Disease[edit | edit source]
Aberrant regulation of histone genes, including HIST1H4I, has been associated with various diseases, including cancer. Dysregulation of histone modifications can lead to changes in gene expression patterns that contribute to tumorigenesis and other pathological processes.
