HMAS Hobart
HMAS Hobart is a Royal Australian Navy Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) named after the city of Hobart, Tasmania. The ship is one of three Hobart-class destroyers built for the Royal Australian Navy, and the third ship to bear the name. The Hobart-class is based on the Navantia designed F100 frigate and is coupled with the Aegis Combat System.
Design and Construction[edit | edit source]
The HMAS Hobart was built by the Air Warfare Destroyer Alliance which consists of the Defence Materiel Organisation, Raytheon Australia, and ASC Pty Ltd. The ship was assembled at the ASC's facility in Osborne, South Australia from 31 pre-fabricated modules (or 'blocks'). Her keel was laid down in September 2012 and she was launched in May 2015.
Operational History[edit | edit source]
HMAS Hobart was commissioned in September 2017. Since then, she has participated in various exercises and operations both domestically and internationally, demonstrating her advanced combat and surveillance capabilities.
Capabilities[edit | edit source]
HMAS Hobart is equipped with the Aegis Combat System incorporating the state-of-the-art phased array radar, AN/SPY 1D(V), in combination with the SM-2 missile, will provide an advanced air defence system capable of engaging enemy aircraft and missiles at ranges in excess of 150km.
The ship also carries a helicopter for surveillance and response to support key warfare areas. The surface warfare function will involve in anti-ship missile defence, and gunfire support roles.
