Haakon County, South Dakota

Haakon County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,937. Its county seat is Philip. The county was created in 1914 and organized in 1915, and was named for Haakon VII, who had become king of Norway in 1905. It is located in the central part of the state, with its county seat, Philip, serving as the main hub of activity.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Haakon County is located in the central part of South Dakota. It is bordered by Ziebach County to the north, Stanley County to the east, Jackson County to the south, and Pennington County to the west. The county's total area is 1,827 square miles, of which 1,811 square miles is land and 16 square miles is water.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,937 people, 836 households, and 560 families residing in the county. The population density was 1.1 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the county was 96.7% White, 0.2% Black or African American, 1.1% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. 1.0% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Philip Health Services, Inc. (PHS) is a non-profit, community-owned health organization located in Philip, South Dakota. PHS provides a wide range of healthcare services, including primary care, emergency care, inpatient care, outpatient care, home health care, and long-term care.

PHS operates the Philip Hospital, a 25-bed critical access hospital, and the Silverleaf Assisted Living Facility, a residential care facility for seniors. PHS also operates several clinics in the area, including the Philip Clinic, the Kadoka Clinic, and the Midland Clinic.
