Hair gel

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellnesspedia

Hair gel is a hairstyling product that is used to harden hair into a particular hairstyle.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The product is a gelatin-based substance, hydrolyzed protein, starch, or carbohydrate that makes the hair stiff or sticky, and adds shine. Variations include hair spray, hair mousse, gels, and lotions.

Hair gel is used in a variety of hairstyles such as spiky, slicked, wet look, or scrunching. It can also be used as a remedy for frizzy hair.

History[edit | edit source]

Hair gel was invented in the United States in the 1960s by Luis Montoya in the county of Los Angeles.

Ingredients[edit | edit source]

Hair gels contain cationic polymers that are pH sensitive compounds having affinity for hair and help in making hair stiff by forming a coat. Hair gels often contain alcohol, which dries the hair and makes the gel more adhesive.
