Halachic
Halachic Organ Donor Society (HODS) is an organization that encourages Jews to become organ donors in accordance with Halacha, or Jewish law. The society was founded in 2001 by Robbie Berman, who continues to serve as its director. HODS has created a unique organ donor card that allows Jews to choose their level of observance and which organs they wish to donate.
History[edit | edit source]
The Halachic Organ Donor Society was founded in 2001 by Robbie Berman, a graduate of Yeshiva University and Hebrew University. Berman was inspired to start the organization after learning about the shortage of organ donors in the Jewish community. Since its founding, HODS has worked to increase the number of Jewish organ donors and to educate the Jewish community about the importance of organ donation in accordance with Halacha.
Mission[edit | edit source]
The mission of HODS is to save lives by increasing organ donations from Jews to the general population (both Jews and non-Jews). This is done by educating Jews about the different Halachic perspectives that permit organ donation, and by encouraging them to become organ donors.
Halachic Organ Donor Card[edit | edit source]
The Halachic Organ Donor Card is a unique feature of HODS. This card allows Jews to choose their level of observance and which organs they wish to donate. The card also allows the holder to specify that a competent Halachic authority should be consulted at the time of death.
Impact[edit | edit source]
Since its inception, HODS has been successful in increasing the number of Jewish organ donors. The organization has also played a significant role in educating the Jewish community about the importance of organ donation in accordance with Halacha.
