History[edit | edit source]

The founding documents, known as "The New College Plan," outlined a vision for a new kind of liberal arts education that would be more flexible and student-centered.
Academics[edit | edit source]
Hampshire College does not have traditional majors. Instead, students design their own programs of study, called "concentrations," which are often interdisciplinary. The academic program is divided into three "divisions":
- Division I: Foundational studies
- Division II: Concentration
- Division III: Advanced project
Students are evaluated through narrative evaluations rather than traditional grades. This approach encourages deep learning and intellectual risk-taking.
