Hancock County is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,662. Its county seat and largest city is Sneedville. The county was established on January 7, 1844, and named after John Hancock, a prominent patriot of the American Revolution.

Hancock County was formed from parts of Hawkins and Claiborne counties. The area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee people before European settlers arrived in the late 18th century. The county has a rich history, including its role in the Civil War and its unique cultural heritage.

Hancock County is situated in the rugged terrain of the Appalachian Mountains. The county covers a total area of 223 square miles, of which 222 square miles is land and 1.2 square miles is water. The Clinch River flows through the county, providing a natural resource for the residents.
