Harold Auten (1891–1964) was a distinguished officer in the Royal Navy during World War I, known for his valor and leadership. He was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Harold Auten was born in 1891. Details about his early life, including his education and family background, remain sparse. However, it is known that he joined the Royal Navy at a young age, embarking on a career that would lead him to become a celebrated war hero.

Military Career[edit | edit source]

Auten's military career is most notable for his service during World War I. He served on Q-ships, which were merchant ships with concealed weaponry, designed to lure submarines into attacking them, at which point the Q-ship would reveal its armaments and engage the enemy. This tactic was part of the Allied efforts to combat the German U-boat menace.

Victoria Cross[edit | edit source]

Harold Auten's most famous action came in 1918, aboard the Q-ship HMS Stock Force. On a mission in the Atlantic, Stock Force was torpedoed by a German U-boat. Despite the severe damage and the risk of sinking, Auten managed to keep the ship afloat and engaged the enemy submarine. Under his command, Stock Force fought off the attack and inflicted damage on the U-boat. For his "conspicuous gallantry, consummate coolness, and skill in command" during this engagement, Auten was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]

After the war, Harold Auten continued to serve in the Royal Navy until his retirement. He passed away in 1964, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and leadership. His actions during World War I, particularly the engagement for which he received the Victoria Cross, remain a testament to his courage and dedication to duty.

Auten's story is not just a personal narrative of gallantry but also highlights the strategic importance of Q-ships in naval warfare during World War I. His leadership and valor are celebrated in military history, serving as an inspiring example for future generations.
