HarperCollins is one of the world's largest publishing companies and is part of the Big Five English-language publishing companies. It is a subsidiary of News Corp, an American mass media and publishing company.

HarperCollins was formed in 1989 by the merger of two long-standing publishing companies, Harper & Row, based in the United States, and William Collins, Sons, based in the United Kingdom.

Harper & Row[edit | edit source]

Harper & Row was founded in 1817 as J. & J. Harper in New York City. The company was renamed Harper & Brothers in 1833. In 1962, it merged with Row, Peterson & Company to become Harper & Row.

William Collins, Sons[edit | edit source]

William Collins, Sons was founded in 1819 in Glasgow, Scotland. It became a major publisher of religious and educational books, as well as fiction and non-fiction.

HarperCollins operates in 18 countries and publishes around 10,000 new books every year in 17 languages. The company has publishing groups in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, India, and China.
