Hazelburn distillery
Hazelburn Distillery was a prominent whisky distillery located in Campbeltown, Scotland. Established in the early 19th century, Hazelburn was known for producing high-quality single malt Scotch whisky. The distillery played a significant role in the history of Campbeltown, which was once considered the "whisky capital of the world."
History[edit | edit source]
Hazelburn Distillery was founded in 1825 by the Greenlees brothers. The distillery quickly gained a reputation for its triple-distilled whisky, a process that set it apart from many other Scottish distilleries, which typically used double distillation. This method resulted in a lighter and smoother spirit.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Hazelburn thrived as part of the booming whisky industry in Campbeltown. However, the distillery faced challenges during the Great Depression and the subsequent decline of the whisky industry in the region. Despite efforts to sustain operations, Hazelburn closed its doors in 1925.
Revival[edit | edit source]
In 2005, the Hazelburn name was revived by the Springbank Distillery, also located in Campbeltown. Springbank began producing a triple-distilled single malt whisky under the Hazelburn label, honoring the original distillery's legacy. The modern Hazelburn whisky is unpeated, making it distinct from Springbank's other offerings.
Production Process[edit | edit source]
Hazelburn whisky is known for its unique production process, which includes:
- Triple Distillation: Unlike most Scotch whiskies, which are typically distilled twice, Hazelburn undergoes a third distillation. This extra step results in a lighter and more refined spirit.
- Unpeated Malt: Hazelburn uses unpeated malt, which means the barley is dried without the use of peat smoke. This gives the whisky a cleaner and more delicate flavor profile.
- Maturation: The whisky is aged in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, which impart complex flavors and aromas to the final product.
Tasting Notes[edit | edit source]
Hazelburn whisky is celebrated for its smooth and elegant character. Common tasting notes include:
- Nose: Light and floral with hints of vanilla, honey, and citrus.
- Palate: Smooth and creamy with flavors of toffee, green apple, and a touch of spice.
- Finish: Long and clean with a subtle sweetness and a hint of oak.
