Health Development Agency
Health Development Agency (HDA) was a special health authority established in 2000 in the United Kingdom with the aim of promoting health and reducing health inequalities. It was abolished in 2005 and its functions were transferred to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
History[edit | edit source]
The Health Development Agency was established in April 2000, following the White Paper "Saving Lives: Our Healthier Nation" (1999), which identified the need for a national body to support the development and implementation of health improvement and health promotion strategies. The HDA was created as a special health authority, directly accountable to the Secretary of State for Health.
In 2005, the HDA was abolished and its functions were transferred to the newly formed National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). This move was part of a wider reorganisation of the National Health Service (NHS) aimed at streamlining health promotion and disease prevention efforts.
Functions[edit | edit source]
The HDA's main function was to develop and implement strategies for health improvement and health promotion. This included conducting research, providing advice and guidance, and supporting local health authorities in their health improvement efforts. The HDA also had a role in reducing health inequalities, which was a key focus of the government's health policy at the time.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
The work of the HDA continues to influence health policy and practice in the UK. The agency's focus on evidence-based health promotion and its commitment to reducing health inequalities have been carried forward by NICE and other bodies. The HDA's work also laid the groundwork for the development of public health strategies in the UK, including the government's current focus on preventive health care.
