Health Insurance Marketplace

Health Insurance Marketplace is a service that helps people shop for and enroll in affordable health insurance. The federal government operates the Marketplace, available at HealthCare.gov, for most states. Some states run their own Marketplaces.

Overview

The Health Insurance Marketplace is a resource where individuals, families, and small businesses can:

• learn about their health coverage options
• compare health insurance plans based on costs, benefits, and other important features
• choose a plan
• enroll in coverage

The Marketplace also provides information on programs that help people with low to moderate income and resources pay for coverage. This includes ways to save on the monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs of coverage available through the Marketplace, and information about other programs, including Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

In some states, the Marketplace is run by the state. In others, it is run by the federal government.

Eligibility

Most people can shop for coverage in the Marketplace. To be eligible you must live in the state where your Marketplace is, you must be a citizen or national of the United States or be lawfully present in the U.S., and you can't be currently incarcerated.

Not everyone who is eligible to buy a health plan in the Marketplace will qualify for savings. Your income and family size are taken into account to determine whether you qualify for savings.

Enrollment

Open Enrollment for health coverage through the Marketplace begins in November each year. When you apply for coverage in the Marketplace, the application will guide you to the best coverage for you and your family.

If you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period because of a life event like losing other coverage, getting married, or having a baby, you can enroll any time.

If you qualify for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), you can apply any time.
