Healthy People
Healthy People is a program of nationwide health-promotion and disease-prevention goals set by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The Healthy People program was first established by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in 1979 and has been updated every decade since.
History[edit | edit source]
The Healthy People initiative was first set into motion in 1979 by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP). The goal of the program was to improve the health of all Americans by creating a framework for prevention. The initiative has been updated every decade, with Healthy People 2020 being the current version.
Goals[edit | edit source]
The main goals of the Healthy People program are to promote healthy behaviors, promote healthy and safe communities, improve systems for health and well-being, and reduce health disparities. These goals are achieved through the implementation of various strategies and interventions.
Healthy People 2020[edit | edit source]
Healthy People 2020 is the current iteration of the Healthy People program. It has four overarching goals:
- Attain high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death.
- Achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups.
- Create social and physical environments that promote good health for all.
- Promote quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors across all life stages.
Future Directions[edit | edit source]
The next iteration of the program, Healthy People 2030, is currently in development. It will focus on a smaller set of objectives, to make it more manageable and actionable.
