Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a condition caused by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which primarily affects the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine (duodenum). This bacterium is a major cause of peptic ulcer disease and is associated with the development of gastric cancer and MALT lymphoma. The infection is common worldwide, with variations in prevalence across different regions and populations.

Helicobacter pylori is a gram-negative, microaerophilic bacterium that can inhabit the stomach's mucous layer. It is uniquely adapted to survive in the highly acidic environment of the stomach.
