Helmut Poppendick

Helmut Poppendick (29 October 1902 – 2 April 1994) was a German physician and SS officer who served as the head of the Personal Staff of the Reich Physician SS and Police. He was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity after World War II.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Poppendick was born in Berlin, Germany, on 29 October 1902. He studied medicine at the University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1926.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his studies, Poppendick worked as a physician in Berlin. He joined the Nazi Party in 1931 and the SS in 1935. In 1943, he was promoted to the rank of SS-Brigadeführer.

As the head of the Personal Staff of the Reich Physician SS and Police, Poppendick was responsible for the medical and health policies of the SS. He was involved in the planning and implementation of the T4 Euthanasia Program, which resulted in the murder of thousands of disabled and mentally ill people.

Post-war[edit | edit source]

After the war, Poppendick was arrested by the Allies and put on trial at the Doctors' Trial in Nuremberg. He was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was released in 1951.

Poppendick died on 2 April 1994.
