Helvécio Martins
Helvécio Martins (1930–2005) was a prominent figure in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), notable for being the first black member to be called as a General Authority since the church's 1978 revelation that extended the priesthood to all worthy male members, regardless of race or color. His life and contributions have been significant in the context of the LDS Church's racial history and its efforts towards inclusivity.
Early Life and Conversion[edit | edit source]
Helvécio Martins was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1930. His journey with the LDS Church began in 1972 when he and his family were introduced to the church by missionaries. Despite the church's policy at the time, which did not allow black men to hold the priesthood, Martins and his family joined the church, demonstrating their faith and commitment to their newfound religion.
Church Service[edit | edit source]
Martins' dedication to his faith and his church did not waver, even in the face of the priesthood restrictions. He served in various capacities, including as a branch president, a mission president's counselor, and a regional representative, contributing significantly to the growth and development of the LDS Church in Brazil.
In 1990, following the 1978 revelation that allowed black men to hold the priesthood, Helvécio Martins was called as a member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy, a General Authority position within the LDS Church. This historic call marked a significant moment in the church's history, symbolizing progress and a move towards greater equality and inclusivity within the faith.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Helvécio Martins' service and leadership within the LDS Church have left a lasting impact. His story is often cited as an example of faith, perseverance, and the power of change within religious institutions. Martins passed away in 2005, but his contributions to the LDS Church and its community are remembered and celebrated.
