H.Chin A Sen

Henk Chin A Sen (18 January 1934 – 11 August 1998) was a Surinamese politician and physician who served as the Prime Minister of Suriname from 1980 to 1982 and subsequently as the President of Suriname from 1982 to 1988. His tenure as a leader was marked by efforts to stabilize the country's economy and navigate the complexities of post-colonial politics in South America.

Henk Chin A Sen was born in Albina, Suriname, into a family of Chinese descent. He pursued his education in medicine, recognizing early on the importance of healthcare in societal development. After completing his medical studies, Chin A Sen worked as a physician, dedicating himself to improving the health standards in his community.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Chin A Sen's entry into politics was driven by his desire to address the socio-economic challenges facing Suriname. In 1980, following a military coup that ousted the civilian government, he was appointed Prime Minister in a government that was largely controlled by the military. His tenure as Prime Minister saw efforts to restore democratic governance and improve the economic situation in Suriname.

In 1982, Chin A Sen ascended to the presidency, a position he held until 1988. His presidency was a tumultuous period for Suriname, characterized by political instability and challenges to his leadership both from within the military and the civilian population.
