Henri Menier
Henri Menier (1853–1913) was a prominent French businessman and chocolatier, best known for his role in the Menier Chocolate company. He was also a noted philanthropist and an influential figure in the development of Anticosti Island in Canada.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Henri Menier was born in Paris, France, in 1853. He was the son of Emile-Justin Menier, who was the founder of the Menier Chocolate company. Henri was educated in Paris and later joined the family business, where he played a significant role in its expansion and modernization.
Menier Chocolate Company[edit | edit source]
The Menier Chocolate company was established in 1816 by Antoine Brutus Menier, Henri's grandfather. Under Henri's leadership, the company continued to grow and innovate. He introduced new production techniques and expanded the company's market reach, making Menier Chocolate one of the leading chocolate manufacturers in the world.
Anticosti Island[edit | edit source]
In 1895, Henri Menier purchased Anticosti Island, a large island in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in Quebec, Canada. He aimed to transform the island into a private hunting and fishing reserve. Menier invested heavily in the island's infrastructure, building roads, a sawmill, and a village named Port-Menier. His efforts significantly boosted the local economy and provided employment opportunities for many residents.

Henri Menier was also known for his philanthropic activities. He supported various charitable causes in France and Canada, including funding hospitals, schools, and other public institutions.
