Herman Kiefer Hospital

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Herman Kiefer Hospital is a historic hospital complex located in the Virginia Park Historic District in Detroit, Michigan. The hospital was named after Dr. Herman Kiefer, a German-American physician who was instrumental in the fight against tuberculosis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

History[edit | edit source]

The Herman Kiefer Hospital was established in 1911 as a response to the tuberculosis epidemic that was sweeping through Detroit at the time. The hospital was designed by the architectural firm of Albert Kahn Associates, and it was one of the first hospitals in the United States to be designed specifically for the treatment of tuberculosis.

The hospital complex includes several buildings, including the main hospital building, a nurses' home, a power plant, and several smaller outbuildings. The main hospital building is a large, six-story brick structure with a central courtyard. The nurses' home is a three-story brick building located to the east of the main hospital building.

In 2013, the City of Detroit sold the hospital complex to a private developer, who plans to redevelop the site into a mixed-use development.

Medical Services[edit | edit source]

Throughout its history, the Herman Kiefer Hospital provided a range of medical services, including tuberculosis treatment, general medical care, and public health services. The hospital was also involved in medical research, particularly in the field of tuberculosis treatment.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

The Herman Kiefer Hospital is a significant part of Detroit's medical history. It is a reminder of the city's fight against tuberculosis in the early 20th century, and it is a testament to the efforts of Dr. Herman Kiefer and others who worked tirelessly to combat this deadly disease.
