Heterosexuality

Heterosexuality is the sexual, romantic, and/or emotional attraction towards individuals of the opposite sex. It is one of the three main classifications of sexual orientation, along with bisexuality and homosexuality, within the heterosexual–homosexual continuum.

Definition

Heterosexuality is romantic or sexual attraction to the opposite sex. Historically, the term "heterosexual" was first used in the late 19th century, in a context of sexual orientation theory and psychology. Today, the term is used in a number of different fields such as psychology, biology, genetics, gender studies, anthropology, and more.

Historical context

The concept of heterosexuality, like all sexual orientations, has developed over time. It was not until the 19th century that the term "heterosexual" was coined in Europe, in the context of a growing understanding of human sexuality and sexual orientation. The term was used to contrast with the earlier term "homosexual" by Karl Maria Kertbeny in 1868.

Biological and environmental factors

There is a considerable body of research that suggests both biological and environmental factors contribute to the development of an individual's sexual orientation. However, the exact causes of heterosexuality are not fully understood. It is believed to be a complex interplay of genetic, hormonal, and environmental influences.

Societal aspects

In many societies, heterosexuality is the norm and is therefore associated with normality, while homosexuality and bisexuality are often stigmatized. This is not universal, as many societies have, and continue to have, different understandings and social norms for sexual behavior.
