Heterobasidion irregulare is a species of fungus belonging to the family Bondarzewiaceae. It is a pathogenic organism that primarily affects coniferous trees, causing root disease and significant economic losses in forestry. This fungus is closely related to Heterobasidion annosum, with which it shares many characteristics, including its mode of infection and the symptoms it causes in host trees. However, Heterobasidion irregulare is distinguished by its genetic makeup and specific host preferences, predominantly affecting trees in North America.

Heterobasidion irregulare manifests as white to cream-colored mycelial growth on the wood of infected trees. It produces fruiting bodies that are flat, irregular in shape, and often found on the trunk or at the base of the host tree. These fruiting bodies release spores that spread the infection to other trees. The fungus penetrates the tree through root contacts or wounds in the bark, leading to decay of the heartwood and, eventually, the death of the tree.
