Heterosexual

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Heterosexuality is the romantic or sexual attraction to the opposite sex. Heterosexuals are often called "straight" and are part of the majority of humans on the basis of sexual orientation.

Definition[edit | edit source]

Heterosexuality is the sexual, romantic, and/or emotional attraction towards individuals of the opposite sex. The term was first used in the late 19th century, in the context of a binary understanding of sexual orientation. The opposite of heterosexuality is homosexuality.

History[edit | edit source]

The concept of heterosexuality, like all sexual orientations, has evolved over time. The term "heterosexual" was first used in 1892 in a book by a Hungarian journalist, Károly Mária Kertbeny. It was used to describe one of the four sexual orientations he identified: heterosexuality, homosexuality, monosexuality, and bisexuality.

Societal aspects[edit | edit source]

In many societies, heterosexuality is viewed as the norm due to the biological imperative of reproduction. However, societal views on heterosexuality have varied throughout history and across cultures. In some cultures, heterosexuality is celebrated, while in others it is stigmatized or even criminalized.
