The Hillsborough Hospital is a psychiatric hospital located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. It is the province's only mental health facility and is operated by Health PEI.
Mission[edit | edit source]
The mission of Hillsborough Hospital is to provide specialized acute and long-term treatment and rehabilitation to individuals with enduring mental illness, mental handicaps, and psycho-geriatric patients. The hospital also offers day services to former patients.
Services[edit | edit source]
Hillsborough Hospital offers a range of specialized services, including assessment, admission, acute and sub-acute treatment and management, behavioral management, rehabilitation and life skills training, domiciliary nursing assessments, and psycho-geriatric services. The hospital's kitchen also supports the delivery of meals by Meals on Wheels.
History[edit | edit source]
The hospital was established in December 1879 as the Prince Edward Island Hospital for the Insane on the present location of Hillsborough Hospital. It was initially located on Falconwood Farm, which spanned 120 acres along the Hillsborough River. The facility was later renamed Falconwood Hospital in 1911 and underwent reconstruction in 1933-34 following a fire in 1931. In 1957, it was renamed Riverside Hospital and in the 1970s, it became known as Hillsborough Hospital. The facility has undergone various changes and expansions over the years.
