Rock Band Hinder on stage

Hinder is an American rock band from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, formed in 2001. The group was established by drummer Cody Hanson, guitarist Joe Garvey, and singer Austin Winkler. They are best known for their hit single "Lips of an Angel" which peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Hinder's style is often classified as post-grunge, drawing comparisons to bands like Nickelback and 3 Doors Down. Over the years, Hinder has experienced several lineup changes, especially in the lead vocalist position, with Winkler leaving the band in 2013 and being replaced by Marshal Dutton in 2015.

History[edit | edit source]

Formation and Early Years (2001-2005)[edit | edit source]

Hinder was formed in 2001 by Hanson, Garvey, and Winkler. The band's early days were spent playing covers and original music in local bars. Their debut album, Extreme Behavior, was released in 2005. The album's success was propelled by the single "Lips of an Angel", which received widespread radio play and became a major hit.

Mainstream Success and Subsequent Albums (2005-Present)[edit | edit source]

Following the success of Extreme Behavior, Hinder released several more albums, including Take It to the Limit in 2008, All American Nightmare in 2010, Welcome to the Freakshow in 2012, and When the Smoke Clears in 2015. Each album showcased the band's evolution in sound and style, though they remained rooted in the post-grunge genre.

The departure of Austin Winkler in 2013 marked a significant change for the band, with Marshal Dutton taking over as lead vocalist. This lineup change was met with mixed reactions from fans but the band continued to tour and produce new music.

Musical Style and Influences[edit | edit source]

Hinder's music is often categorized as post-grunge, but they also incorporate elements of hard rock, alternative rock, and country rock into their sound. Their influences include bands such as Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith, and Motley Crue, which is reflected in their guitar-driven music and lyrical themes that often revolve around love, heartbreak, and personal struggle.

Band Members[edit | edit source]

  • Current members include Cody Hanson (drums), Joe Garvey (guitar), and Marshal Dutton (vocals). The band has seen several members come and go, especially in the roles of bassist and rhythm guitarist.
