Hirschberg

Hirschberg is a town in the district of Görlitz, in the Free State of Saxony, Germany. It is situated near the border with Poland, 4 km south of Görlitz.

Hirschberg was first mentioned in a document in 1305. The town was founded by German settlers in the course of the Ostsiedlung. The town's name, which means "deer mountain" in German, is derived from the coat of arms of the lords of Bieberstein, who owned the town in the 14th century.

In the 19th century, Hirschberg was a center of the textile industry. Many of the town's buildings from this period, including the town hall and several churches, are still standing today.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Hirschberg is located in the eastern part of Saxony, near the border with Poland. The town is situated in a valley surrounded by hills. The river Neisse flows through the town.

Economy[edit | edit source]

The economy of Hirschberg is mainly based on the textile industry. There are also several small and medium-sized enterprises in the town, including a brewery and a manufacturer of musical instruments.

Hirschberg has a rich cultural heritage, with several historic buildings and a museum dedicated to the town's history and the textile industry. The town also hosts several cultural events throughout the year, including a music festival and a Christmas market.

Transport[edit | edit source]

Hirschberg is connected to the German railway network and has a station on the line from Görlitz to Zittau. The town is also accessible by road via the Bundesstraße 99.
