Hogeweyk

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Hogeweyk is a specially designed village in Weesp, the Netherlands. It is notable for its innovative approach to care for elderly people with dementia. The village is designed to provide a safe, familiar and social environment for its residents.

History[edit | edit source]

Hogeweyk was established in 2009 by the Dutch care organization Vivium Zorggroep. The concept was developed in response to the traditional nursing home model, which was seen as inadequate for providing a high quality of life for residents with dementia.

Design[edit | edit source]

The village is designed to resemble a typical Dutch town, with streets, squares, gardens and a supermarket. The houses are styled in different recognizable Dutch themes, such as 1950s, 1970s, and traditional Dutch. This is intended to provide a familiar environment for the residents, which can help to reduce confusion and anxiety.

Care[edit | edit source]

Residents live in small groups in their own houses, with 24-hour care provided by specially trained staff. The staff wear everyday clothes instead of uniforms, and carry out household tasks together with the residents, such as cooking and cleaning. This approach is based on the concept of "normal living", and is intended to promote independence and social interaction.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Hogeweyk has received international attention for its innovative approach to dementia care. It has been praised for its focus on quality of life and respect for individuality, and has inspired similar projects in other countries.
