- Holbrook was founded in 1881 and incorporated in 1917. The city was named after the first chief engineer of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, Henry Randolph Holbrook. It has a rich history that includes Native American tribes, Spanish explorers, and pioneers.

- Holbrook is located at 34°54′N 110°10′W. The city has a total area of 15.4 square miles, all of it land. It is situated on the banks of the Little Colorado River, in the midst of the Painted Desert.
