Homeotic genes are a group of genes that control the pattern of body formation during early embryonic development of organisms. These genes are critical in determining the identity and arrangement of body segments in a developing embryo. These complexes contain multiple homeotic genes that are expressed in a specific order along the anterior-posterior axis of the embryo, corresponding to the body segments they influence.

Hox genes are a subset of homeotic genes that are found in many animals, including humans. They are responsible for the proper placement of segment structures such as limbs and organs.
