Hondarribi Beltza

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Hondarribi Beltza is a red grape variety that is native to the Basque Country in Spain. It is primarily used in the production of Txakoli, a slightly sparkling, very dry white wine with high acidity and low alcohol content. Hondarribi Beltza is one of the main grape varieties used in the Denominación de Origen (DO) of Getariako Txakolina, Bizkaiko Txakolina and Arabako Txakolina.

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of Hondarribi Beltza are not well documented, but it is believed to have been cultivated in the Basque Country for centuries. The grape is named after the town of Hondarribia, where it is thought to have originated.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Hondarribi Beltza is a late ripening variety that requires a warm climate to fully mature. It is resistant to most diseases, but is susceptible to botrytis due to its tight bunches. The grape is grown in small quantities in the Basque Country, with the majority of plantings found in the DOs of Getariako Txakolina, Bizkaiko Txakolina and Arabako Txakolina.

Wine production[edit | edit source]

Hondarribi Beltza is used to produce Txakoli, a wine that is traditionally served in a pintxos bar in the Basque Country. The wine is known for its high acidity, low alcohol content, and slight effervescence. It is typically consumed young and pairs well with the local cuisine, particularly seafood.
