Hoochery Distillery

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Hoochery Distillery is a distillery located in Kununurra, Western Australia. It is recognized as the oldest continuously operating distillery in Western Australia, and is renowned for its production of rum and other distilled beverages.

History[edit | edit source]

The Hoochery Distillery was established in 1995 by Raymond "Spike" Dessert III, who had moved to the Kimberley region in 1972. Dessert began experimenting with distillation due to an excess of sugarcane in the region, and the lack of a local distillery. The name "Hoochery" is a play on the words "hooch" and "brewery".

Production[edit | edit source]

The distillery primarily produces rum, using locally grown sugarcane and a traditional pot still method of distillation. The rum is aged in oak barrels, which gives it a distinctive flavor. In addition to rum, the Hoochery also produces a range of other spirits, including whiskey, brandy, and liqueurs.

Products[edit | edit source]

Some of the notable products produced by the Hoochery Distillery include:

  • Ord River Rum: This is the distillery's flagship product. It is a dark rum, aged in oak barrels.
  • Spike's Reserve: A premium rum, named after the distillery's founder.
  • Kimberley Moon: A white rum, named after the annual festival held in Kununurra.
  • Agave Spirit: A spirit made from the fermented juice of the agave plant, similar to tequila.

Awards and recognition[edit | edit source]

The Hoochery Distillery has received numerous awards for its products, including gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the International Wine and Spirit Competition.
