Hoonah-Angoon Census Area, AK

The Hoonah-Angoon Census Area is a census area located in the U.S. state of Alaska. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,150. It is part of the unorganized borough and therefore has no borough seat. Its largest community is the city of Hoonah.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The census area has a total area of 10,914 square miles, of which 7,525 square miles is land and 3,389 square miles (31.1%) is water. It includes the former Hoonah-Angoon Census Area of the Alaska Panhandle.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,574 people, 1,062 households, and 736 families residing in the census area.

Healthcare in the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area is primarily provided by two main facilities: the SEARHC Hoonah Health Center and the Angoon Health Center.

SEARHC Hoonah Health Center[edit | edit source]

The SEARHC Hoonah Health Center is a primary healthcare facility located in Hoonah, AK. It is managed by the SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC), a non-profit tribal health consortium which provides medical services to the residents of Southeast Alaska. The center offers a range of services including family medicine, emergency medical services, and behavioral health services.

Angoon Health Center[edit | edit source]

The Angoon Health Center is another primary healthcare facility serving the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area. It is also managed by SEARHC and provides similar services to the Hoonah Health Center. In addition to these, the center also offers dental services.

Education in the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area is provided by the Chatham School District, which operates schools in the towns of Angoon, Gustavus, Hoonah, Klukwan, and Tenakee Springs.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Transportation in the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area is primarily by sea and air, with no connecting roads to the rest of Alaska. The area is served by the Alaska Marine Highway and by small local and regional airlines.
