Horseshoe bats are a group of bat species belonging to the family Rhinolophidae. These bats are characterized by their distinctive nose-leafs, which are involved in echolocation. The name "horseshoe bat" is derived from the shape of the nose-leaf, which resembles a horseshoe. They are found in temperate and tropical regions of Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Horseshoe bats are small to medium-sized bats with a wingspan ranging from 25 to 35 cm. They have large, pointed ears and a characteristic complex nose-leaf. The nose-leaf is thought to focus the ultrasound they emit when navigating and hunting for insects in the dark. Their fur color varies from species to species, ranging from grey to brown to reddish-brown.

Echolocation is a key aspect of horseshoe bats' navigation and feeding behavior. They emit high-frequency sounds that bounce off objects and return as echoes, which the bats interpret to navigate and locate prey. Their role in disease transmission to humans is a subject of ongoing research, highlighting the importance of understanding bat biology and ecology to prevent future zoonotic diseases.
