Hours of service
Hours of Service (HOS) are regulations issued by agencies to control the working hours of drivers. These rules are designed to eliminate or reduce the incidence of fatigue-related accidents and health issues among drivers. The regulations vary by country and are typically enforced by a governmental body such as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in the United States.

The concept of regulating hours of service has its roots in the early 20th century when the first laws were enacted to limit the working hours of railroad workers. The need for such regulations became apparent with the rise in railroad accidents and the recognition of the dangers of fatigue. In the United States, the FMCSA regulates the hours of service for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers. The rules limit the number of daily and weekly hours a CMV driver may drive. In the European Union, the European Working Time Directive governs the hours of service for workers, including drivers. The directive sets maximum weekly work hours, minimum rest periods, and provisions for night work.
