Huambo was founded in 1912 during the period of Portuguese Angola. The city was originally named Nova Lisboa (New Lisbon) in honor of the capital of Portugal. It was intended to be a major administrative and commercial center. The city experienced significant growth and development during the colonial period.

After Angola gained independence from Portugal in 1975, the city was renamed Huambo. The Angolan Civil War (1975-2002) had a profound impact on Huambo, causing extensive damage and disruption. The city has since been in a process of reconstruction and development.
