Hubig's Pies

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Hubig's Pies was a popular brand of fruit and chocolate pies that became a cultural icon in New Orleans, Louisiana. Founded in 1922 by Simon Hubig, the company produced a variety of single-serving pies that were a staple in the diets of locals and a must-try for visitors. The pies were known for their distinctive packaging, featuring a cartoon character named "Savory Simon," and were available in flavors such as apple, lemon, peach, and chocolate.

History[edit | edit source]

The Hubig's Pies factory was originally established in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1922, but it was the New Orleans location, opened the same year, that would become synonymous with the brand. The company thrived for decades, surviving the Great Depression and becoming an integral part of the New Orleans food culture. However, in 2012, a devastating fire destroyed the factory, leading to the suspension of pie production. Despite numerous announcements and plans to rebuild and restart production, as of my last update, Hubig's Pies had not returned to the market.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

Hubig's Pies were more than just a snack in New Orleans; they were a cultural touchstone. The pies were often associated with Mardi Gras celebrations, packed in lunches, and served as a common treat in local households. The loss of the factory was mourned by the community, highlighting the deep connection between the brand and the city's identity.

Flavors and Products[edit | edit source]

The company offered a wide range of flavors, including:

  • Apple
  • Lemon
  • Peach
  • Chocolate
  • Coconut
  • Banana
  • And seasonal flavors such as sweet potato during the holidays.

Each pie was fried and then glazed, creating a unique texture and taste that set Hubig's Pies apart from other snack pies available on the market.

The Fire and Aftermath[edit | edit source]

On July 27, 2012, a massive fire engulfed the Hubig's Pies factory in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans. The fire not only destroyed the production facility but also dealt a significant blow to the local economy and the cultural landscape of the city. Efforts to rebuild and resume production were announced, reflecting the community's support and demand for the return of Hubig's Pies.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Despite the current absence from the market, Hubig's Pies remains a beloved memory for many in New Orleans and beyond. The brand's legacy is a testament to the unique culinary culture of New Orleans and the enduring appeal of simple, comforting foods.
